Resumen: La aplicación de la técnica Cameo (Characterizations automatically made and edited online) a la trayectoria investigadora de Marshall McLuhan, una de las metodologías de análisis y representación de la información científica más avanzada, permite construir un retrato científico del teórico de la comunicación canadiense y responder a cuestiones como cuáles fueron sus intereses profesionales y académicos, qué autores influyeron en sus teorías y cómo ha evolucionado supensamiento en los estudios de Comunicación. Analizando la información relacional de citas contenida en los artículos sobre McLuhan del ISI Web of Science es posible crear un mapa con su trayectoria –reconociendo a los autores que más han influido en su carrera profesional– y una segunda representación con las ‘huellas’ que ha dejado su pensamiento en el panorama actual. Se aplican técnicas bibliométricas avanzadas para investigar en Comunicación y en Ciencias Sociales.

Title: A scientometric approach to communication research: the Marshall McLuhan case

Abstract: The application of the Cameo (Characterizations Automatically Made and Edited Online) bibliometric technique -one of the most advanced methodologies for the analysis and representation of information- to the research history of Marshall McLuhan allows us to create a scientific portrait of this Canadian communications expert. The Cameo portrait identifies McLuhan's professional and academic interests, the authors that most heavily influenced his wave-breaking theories and the evolution of his line of thought in current trends of Communication. By analysing the relational information of citations contained in articles about McLuhan in the ISI Web of Science, we were able to create a map of his intellectual sojourns, including signposts of the most influential authors in his professional career, along with a second representation that shows the "footprints" his writings have left in the world.
