Call for Papers «Interaction and visualization» – EPI

On 23 March 2020, Navid Mamoon and Gabriel Rasskin, two students from Carnegie Mellon University, launched Covisualizer, an interactive visualization application that allows one to consult, practically in real time and by means of a globe, the number of victims of Covid-19 in every country. In a few days, it reached 70 million users. Covisualizer is just one of the numerous interfaces that have been created to facilitate the understanding and consultation of the statistical data that are constantly being recorded regarding the pandemic. Its success is due to the skill shown by its authors in designing an interface in which visualization and interaction are combined effectively. In other words, through interactivity, the user explores the maps and establishes their own visual narrative. Through interactive maps, the media, state agencies, and research centers have constructed an account of the epidemic, focusing on those aspects of the outbreak that they have considered most relevant (Danielson, 2020).

Proposing interactivity and visualization as a binomial reinforces the centrality of the user in the processes of access, dialog, and relationship with data through interfaces (McKenna et al., 2017). Thus, for example, in social communication, compared with classical media where in, e.g., a newspaper article the text explains the story and the graphics or images provide support or evidence for the narrative, images escape from such a secondary role in new digital media. Thanks to their interactive dimension, these visual products now occupy a prominent place in the narrative of the story (Pérez-Montoro, 2018). At least that is what media like The New York Times aspired to when, in their forecasts for 2020, they marked as a challenge the improvement of visibility in reports and the exploration of new dynamics for interaction with the audience (Leonhardt et al., 2017).

Recognizing the centrality of interaction and visualization in increasingly rich and complex informational processes allows a rethink of both the practices and systems that we establish for them to take place. The digital ecosystem has generated its own dynamics that question the relationships established between information, what is conceived as a story, the curation of diverse content, and forms of access, consumption, and participation. It also makes it possible to explore the roles that the actors who interact and relate to information should, can, or want to play: journalists, librarians, information curators, audiences, researchers, the media, and the receiving society (Freixa; Pérez-Montoro; Codina, 2020).

Giving centrality to the interaction and visualization binomial also allows us to question how the digital text itself is defined, designed, produced, consumed, and analyzed, understood in a broad sense: multimedia, mutable, modifiable, and transmedia.
