About this theme
The COVID-19 pandemic and the availability of digital technologies that can support online learning have been an unprecedented opportunity for the transformation of education at a global level. E-learning is definitely here to stay.
The field of e-learning studies plays a crucial role in understanding the learning world and in grasping our increasingly technologically mediated ways of life, and our relationship to the world around us. E-learning is the combined use of hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning. Educational technology creates, uses, and manages technological processes and educational resources to help improve user academic performance and communication.
In 2021, the European Commission launched an overarching policy initiative to support the sustainable and effective adaptation of the education and training systems of EU Member States to the digital age: Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027)
Numerous studies have been conducted about the effectiveness of online learning, and the challenges and restrictions that it can cause to various actors in the learning processes have been considered. But the digital transformation of teaching and learning can only be sustainable in the future if changes and transformations within the teaching and communication system are continuously evaluated for their strengths and weaknesses.
This special issue plans to bring together a collection of research and review around a common concern for new technologies in learning and communication. This initiative is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field of digital learning innovations.

Bilingual publication
All the articles of Profesional de la información are published in English and optionally in English + Spanish, the first being the «official» version that is sent to international databases for indexing. Authors can submit a single version for peer review.
References’ format
To submit an article it is not necessary that the cited bibliographical references be in the format or style of EPI. If approved, the authors will be asked to send the bibliography in the format used by the journal.
Evaluation
All articles published in EPI are double-blind peer reviewed by two or more members of the journal’s International Scientific Committee, and other reviewers, always external to the Editorial Committee. The journal undertakes to respond with the results of the review.

Sobre el monográfico
La pandemia del COVID-19 y la disponibilidad de tecnologías digitales que pueden apoyar el aprendizaje en línea, han sido y son una oportunidad sin precedentes para la transformación de la educación a nivel mundial.
El e-learning, sin duda, ha llegado para quedarse.
El campo de los estudios de e-learning desempeña un papel crucial para comprender nuestro modo de aprendizaje, cada vez más mediado por la tecnología, y nuestra relación con el mundo que nos rodea. El e-learning es el uso combinado de hardware, software y teoría y práctica educativas para facilitar el aprendizaje. La tecnología educativa crea, utiliza y gestiona procesos tecnológicos y recursos educativos para ayudar a mejorar el rendimiento académico y la comunicación de los usuarios.
En 2021, la Comisión Europea puso en marcha una iniciativa política global para apoyar la adaptación sostenible y eficaz de los sistemas de educación y la formación en los Estados miembros de la UE a la era digital: Plan de Acción de Educación Digital (2021-2027).
Se han realizado numerosos estudios sobre la eficacia del aprendizaje en línea; al tiempo, que se han considerado los retos y restricciones que pueden tener en los distintos actores estos procesos de aprendizaje. La transformación digital de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje solo puede ser sostenible en el futuro si los cambios y transformaciones dentro del sistema de enseñanza y comunicación se evalúan continuamente en busca de sus fortalezas y debilidades.
Este número especial pretende reunir una selección de artículos de investigación y revisiones en torno a una preocupación común por las nuevas tecnologías en el aprendizaje y la comunicación. Esta iniciativa se centra en nuevas perspectivas, desarrollos novedosos, retos actuales, avances recientes y perspectivas de futuro en el campo de las innovaciones digitales en el aprendizaje.

Evaluación
Todos los artículos publicados en EPI son revisados por pares en doble ciego por dos o más miembros del Comité Científico Internacional de la revista, y otros revisores, siempre externos al Comité Editorial. La revista se compromete a responder con los resultados de la revisión.
